Moles are one of the most common skin conditions, affecting people of all ages and skin types. Many people want to have their moles removed either for cosmetic reasons or because they appear cancerous. Even though mole removal is a common procedure, many patients have questions about what to expect both during and after the treatment.
In this post, we’ll answer 6 of the most common questions patients ask about mole removal at the Centre for Minor Surgery.
1. Can a mole grow back after removal?
The short answer is yes; moles can potentially grow back after being removed. The more complete answer is that it is much less common for moles to grow back when a skilled medical provider performs the procedure and ensures the mole is entirely removed. The chances of regrowth increase when some mole cells remain after the removal procedure. If you notice a mole recurring after removal, be sure to have it evaluated.
2. How long does it take for a mole removal to heal?
The time it takes to heal after having a mole removed depends on the technique used, the size and depth of the removal, and individual patient factors. Typically, a scab or crust will form, lasting about 2 to 3 weeks. It’s important to keep the area clean and dry and prevent it from being stretched or irritated. 3. What should I not do after mole removal?
Follow these tips to ensure your skin heals properly after having a mole removed:
- Avoid immersing the wound in water until it’s fully healed or your doctor gives you the go-ahead.
- Don’t pick at any scabs that form.
- Avoid strenuous activities that might stretch or irritate the wound.
- Protect the treatment area from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
If you have any concerns about how the wound is healing, contact your provider. Common signs of infection include increased redness or tenderness, yellow pus discharge, and fever. You can learn more about caring for the mole removal treatment area in our previous blog post.
4. Is mole removal painful?
Our surgeons numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic before removing the mole, ensuring you remain comfortable during the procedure. Some soreness and itching after the removal are common but typically subside within a few days.
5. Does mole removal leave a scar?
Any time a surgeon makes an incision, even for minor procedures, a scar results. Our plastic surgeons use techniques that minimize scarring, whether the area heals on its own or is stitched together. You may notice a pinkish, brownish, or reddish mark develop, which will usually fade during the next several months until it’s almost imperceptible. If you feel your scar remains unsightly, our surgeons have the expertise to minimize its appearance.
6. How long after mole removal can I swim?
As mentioned above, it is important to keep the wound dry while it mends. It typically takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the wound to heal fully, but the timeline varies depending on the size and location of the removal site. If you’re unsure whether you can swim after removing a mole, contact your surgeon for reassurance.
